More Stenciled T-Shirts :: I Heart Horses, Harry Potter, and Camp Half-Blood

I love reusing old ideas but I hate redoing old work.

So I was pretty annoyed with myself when one of my daughters wanted to make an “I {heart} Horses” t-shirt for a friend’s birthday gift recently, like the one we’d made for Cassie, but I couldn’t find my stencil template anywhere.

I was slightly less annoyed with myself when another daughter wanted to make another “Camp Half-Blood” t-shirt, because I did find the template, but only after looking through every old laptop and back-up drive I could find in the house.

To avoid either of these scenarios in the future, I’m loading my three most recently used T-shirt stencil templates here. If someone else can use them too, so much the better.

1) I {Heart} Horses

Notes: I used fusible web to stick a pink fabric heart onto the t-shirt (I love that the heart matches the pink neck trim, even though you can’t see that when it’s being worn), then stitched around it, but one could just use pink paint too. Also, I was a little lazy with the heart on the template. Long story short, I ended up with two tiny points at the base of the heart and didn’t feel like messing with it anymore so left it as is. Obviously, you should just cut a single point – the tiny black line shows the centerline if you’re a perfectionist.

2) Please Don’t Say Dead Sirius, I’m a Harry Potter Fan

20140921_124655

You can’t really tell in the photo above, but while we did most of the text in white paint, we then painted over “Sirius” and “Harry Potter” with silver paint to make it stand out more. (For the i/e combo letter, I cut the dot of the “i” and the little “serif” on the “e” when I cut out everything else, but then ironed the little serif piece onto the shirt. I painted only the “e” with white paint. After it had dried, I pulled off the little “serif” piece, then painted the dot, the serif area and left side of the “e” with silver.)

And why didn’t I take more photos to illustrate all these steps?

Because, like usual, it was about 3 minutes before we had to leave for the party and I was just finishing up little details. No time for nice photos!

P.S. One of the details I was finishing up was using a black sharpie to draw over some areas of white that seeped under the stencil. Made the letters look much crisper and cleaner. And the cover-up wasn’t even noticeable from normal viewing distances.

So anyway, here’s the template. I put a small silver HP on the back near the neckline. I thought about putting a snitch there too, but had neither gold paint nor time.

3) Camp Half-Blood, Cabin 6

This shirt has been a BIG hit at the recent late elementary/early middle school birthday parties. After making two, I finally got smart and cut three layers of freezer paper at a time, so as to have extra stencils with less work.

I’m A-Doodlin’

I while back I came across these fantastic “doodles” by Stephanie at Homegrown Hospitality

And then I saw that I could sign up for a doodle class. So I did!

{You still can too! Top right corner…}

For Week 1, we eased into things by coloring and further embellishing something she’d already penned. Here’s the result of my bit of fun with colored pencils and a black pen:

And here is one of Sophie’s:Doodle-Wk1-Sophie1

I’ve loved seeing what some of the other participants did too:

So, you wanna doodle too?

St. Patrick’s Day Word Art

Here’s another word art shape thing I drew back in high school. Are you wearing green today?

P.S. See my little initials there? Two random facts that makes me happy: my initials didn’t change when I got married and took husband’s last name AND his initials are the exact same as mine!

Nursing Cover and Baby Shower Banner

The baby shower this morning was lots of fun. And I’m so glad I had time yesterday to make a nursing cover for the new mom, with some cute fabric remnants I picked up recently. IMG_1241Never had one of these slick things myself, but there are loads of tutorials online; picked this one to guide me (super-well written, great pictures, etc.).

But then decided I wanted it to be reversible. Which wouldn’t work if I used boning. So figured out another way to stiffen it. I wonder how it will fare long term; sure seems like it’s stiff enough…IMG_1227

Here’s me modeling it with the non-pink side out, the one that won’t look quite so out of place in a diaper bag filled with stuff for a little boy.IMG_1220

Speaking of little boy, my co-host had a cute idea for a banner showcasing the baby’s name. I cut some onesie shapes out of cardstock and glued on letters cut from scrapbook paper. I would’ve loved to clip the onesies to the string with some wee clothes pins, but didn’t have time to shop for them, so just punched little holes instead. We sent it home with the new mom; she thought it would look nice on one of the nursery walls.IMG_1244

In Honor of the Day...

Something I found in my files the other day (because I never throw anything away), dated 2-93...

Updated 2/15/2009!: Hmm, it was ten eleven! years ago today that I started dating the guy who is now my husband. Almost started the day before, but... Too bad, 'cause I'm much more of a "We started dating on Friday the 13th" kinda gal than a "We started dating on Valentine's Day" one. But all's well that ends well...

And four years ago today, I got one of the coolest V-day gifts ever: a Sophie. A girl who only wants to wear dresses, who is a pro at cutting things out and then taping them into crazy sculptures, who brings such joy into my life, and who I hope never gets lost in the shuffle from being neither the oldest girl nor the youngest. Happy birthday, my sweet middle-est!

Sophie - A Year In Review

(Ha ha, caught a typo; I'd written "who brings such job into my life..." Yeah, she does that too, with her dwindling list of what she will eat at dinner and her recent return into answering nearly request with a vehement "No." But despite the hard days, it's a job I wouldn't give up for the world! Besides, just when I was starting to despair at the horribleness of this seemingly endless "No" phase, she introduced a new response. Not all the time, but just enough to keep me sane: a cheery "Yes, ma'am!" that is too too cute!)

Mental Fragments...

Made Beef Stroganoff, first time ever last night. I do like to take pictures of my food, but the photo below came from Cook's Illustrated, same as the recipe. Tasted fine, but Ken and I both like my Oma's Goulasch better, maybe just 'cause that's what we're used to...
Photobucket- - -
Made the recipe in part so I'd have something nice to bring to my friend Suzanne yesterday. I'd rather cook, she'd rather clean (see end of post). So, in exchange for dinner once a week, she cleans my house once a week. This is our third week, and I'm lovin' this deal!
- - -
Before she left, she also helped me rearrange the living room, but I keep forgetting to take "after" pictures when it's light outside, so will post those soon...

So Friday morning, my housed was cleaned by one friend. Then Friday evening, my plate was dropped off by another. We were at Color Me Mine together last week. She wrote a great post where she described our night there in the form of a personality quiz. Everyone's pottery turned out so beautifully (including yours, Kristi!!!). Click the link above to see them all; here's mine (photo swiped from Kristi's site):
PhotobucketUsed my favorite colors and a stencil that reminded me of my hibiscus. Now I need to get a plate hanger so I can hang it by my sink, to be my "sunshine" during this frigid spell we're in.

Need to get a dowel too. We started making a closet for the doll clothes, inspired by LiEr's cardboard creation. (LiEr is a whiz with cardboard and tape.)

The Crafty Raven Game

I love Haba. They produce some of the cutest toys using such wonderful materials. And they also make some great games. Like Orchard. Which was soon renamed The Crafty* Raven in our house. (*Note: that's crafty as in artful and sly, not artsy and creative.)

And every time we played it, I thought how fun it would be to make all the little parts. So for Christmas, my niece got a home-made version of Orchard The Crafty Raven. Oh, what a crafty** bonanza it was for me: (**Now it's crafty as in artsy and creative...)
  • weaving little baskets out of felt
  • fashioning little fruits out of Sculpey clay, wooden beads (hidden inside the clay), black leather, and clove pieces
  • sewing a mini-quilt-type-thing to be the game board. (I pretty much copied the size and layout of the original game, but I have to say it, I love my colors so much better than theirs!)
  • formatting a cute little instructions sheet
  • cutting a 9-piece raven puzzle out of cardboard, then decorating it with black fabric and yellow puffy paint (Heidi drew the raven for me!)
  • decoupaging a dice so it has the appropriate symbols as well as a box to contain everything
Could one single project have included more areas of craftiness?!?

And (other than needing more clay), with the leftover supplies, I have enough to make one for us too. Woo hoo! Maybe I can offload the original on ebay then...

Scenic wall art for Sas

More Saskia stuff. I saw a similar idea on Debbie Travis' Facelift so decided to make this for Saskia's birthday. She: 1) loves nature and sunsets, 2) was jotting down quotes she found in a magazine on our plane trip to Vermont, and 3) is always commenting (i.e. complaining) that her walls are so bare. So I thought this would be a fun gift for her.

I didn't actually make it today, but I did finally "make" a picture of it! : ) Had to do it while they were all up on the wall again -- we're having issues getting them to stick! For the record, a while after adding adhesive pads to the corners instead of the centers of each square, we heard the first one fall off again. -sigh-

Oh, I guess I should mention, the squares are CD covers - the thick ones. I pulled the black CD holder part out, put the picture in the back of the cover, then snapped the CD holder thing back in place. Maybe I should've tried the slim cases.

The quotes (and ideas for layouts) I found at allposters.com under Inspirational Magnets.
